Collecting Information with Spyware

Updated: Mar 20, 2024

Lab provided by the College of Engineering and Computing at the University of South Carolina Lab Overview:

Spyware is malware that infects a device to gather information about its users without their consent. One way to exploit a security vulnerability is in the operating system or in an application. Another way is to trick the victim into clicking on a malicious link that is delivered through a phishing email. Hackers and attackers can also hide spyware on what looks like a legitimate program through a Remote Access Trojan (RAT). As soon as the victim installs the malicious app, the machine will be infected.

Spyware functions can include password stealers, information stealers, screen monitoring, and keylogging.

The goals of this lab are to:

  1. Understand how spyware works

  2. Create a malicious payload

  3. Infiltrate a victim’s machine using a RAT

  4. Install a spyware that takes screenshots, streams the victim’s screen, collects keystrokes, monitors the victim’s camera, and records the victim’s microphone.
